Hi Splashhall Members

I am offering this members' contest to inspire, kick start
your writing skills and reward your hard work.

MIND YOUR METAPHOR

Write a poem containing the most original
metaphor you can come up with.
This can be rhyme, zen, nature, spiritual, free verse, any length
and subject. A fine metaphor is what I am looking for.
Not several different ones in the poem, but one solid, extended metaphor.

GUIDELINES

*Participants must be SplashHall members. (its easy and free)
*Only one entry per person
*Poem must be titled.
*Judges will not be eligible to enter or receive prize money
*Please enter your poem in this thread.

First prize is $50
Second prize is $20.00
Third prize: $10.00

I will be coming in frequently, but not to critique.
All prizes will be awarded via money order and winners have the option
to donate their winnings to the Splashhall Poetry & Art Community.

Edit as much as you need up until the close of the contest.
You have from beginning May 1, 2007, with the deadline for submission being 8:00 AM (PST) Thursday, May 31, 2007

Dick Bakken’s latest book is Greatest Hits (Pudding House Publications, 2005), which features his 12 most influential poems 1967-2002. It is a volume in the invitation-only Gold series that includes hits books by over 200 American poets. Bakken did a 20-event new book reading tour of the West—El Paso to Seattle, San Francisco to Santa Fe—to promote this book. His two months on the road were nearly an exact repeat of his 20-event circuit the year before for Twin Towers (Carrington Press, 2003), a limited edition offering on special papers presenting his reaction to the WTC attacks. To piggyback that tour, Bakken’s sold-out audio cassette was reissued in spiffy new packaging to make The Other Side: Dick Bakken Live (Brushfire, 1986, 2003) selection available again. And during that same loop Bakken’s earlier Feet with the Jesus (Lynx House Press, 1989) sold down to its last box of copies. She has traveled in over 20 countries, lived in Europe for 6 years and was part of an East Indian family for 22 years. SplashHall Poetry Director Witt Wittmann a recipient of the James A. Rodgers Creative writing award, was born and reared in Lake City, SC. She has attended the the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. Recently retired from the public school system, she now spends her time editing and illustrating books for others. She also the Poetry Directory at Splashhall Poetry. Wittmann is a self-taught, award-winning author and artist. Witt's work has been recognized and displayed at South Carolina's Artisans Center, and her tatted treasures have been exhibited throughout the state. witt has published two books: TatWitt: What I learned When I Learned To Tat (Union County Writers Press 2002) and Musing at La Poulaille (D-N Publishing 2002). TatWitt is an inspirational book with essays and poetry to motivate people to pursue their love for the arts. Belinda Subraman interviews and discovers the many talents of Scott Docherty. Scott is a singer, songwriter, keyboardist, poet, and artist.

Long one of L.A.'s musical treasures, Scott Docherty was born on the 20th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th, Docherty has written and performed some of the most heartfelt and beautiful music ever to be born in the Golden State, such as his song "Living Water," a masterpiece of songwriting that is one of the most divinely-inspired songs ever devoted to the divine. Born in beautiful Brooklyn, Docherty was raised in Southern California, where he started playing piano and writing music as a kid.

Scott worked with the late, great Jack Segal (the lyricist of such standards as "When Sunny Gets Blue" and "Scarlet Ribbons") then the VP of AGAC (the American Guild of Authors and Composers). His first song was published in 1982, and at about the same time he started playing keyboards for many artists and bands, including Paul Zollo & The Ghosters, with whom he wrote many beautiful and fun songs, including "Noelle," "Season of Grace," and the ebullient reggae fest "African Mask." (Zollo and Docherty continue to collaborate to this day, and are working on many songs for their respective upcoming albums.

BZoO HomeGrown Radio is looking for a political Host. We feature alternative programming. Currently we feature Independent Music and Spoken Word along with talk and interview shows.

We are looking for someone that would like to have their own Political Show. You would need to be familar with audio, recording and podcasting. We would like to present a show focused on environmental, social and humanitarian rights and the up and coming elections.You would want to create your own talk show with a variety of guest. It would be at least weekly and present 30-60 minutes. Other than that the show would be completely yours to create.

BZoO Radio Host Belinda Subraman Belinda’s own writing has grown to span a vast array of subjects, styles and publications. She has traveled in over 20 countries, lived in Europe for 6 years and was part of an East Indian family for 22 years. These cross-cultural experiences often inform her work as well as her experiences as a Registered Nurse. These days her poetry, stories, and art can be found in hundreds of journals, reviews, anthologies, books and chapbooks. Since 1994 her archives are housed at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in the Center for Southwest Research. SplashHall Poetry Director Witt Wittmann a recipient of the James A. Rodgers Creative writing award, was born and reared in Lake City, SC. She has attended the the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. Recently retired from the public school system, she now spends her time editing and illustrating books for others. She also the Poetry Directory at Splashhall Poetry. Wittmann is a self-taught, award-winning author and artist. Witt's work has been recognized and displayed at South Carolina's Artisans Center, and her tatted treasures have been exhibited throughout the state. witt has published two books: TatWitt: What I learned When I Learned To Tat (Union County Writers Press 2002) and Musing at La Poulaille (D-N Publishing 2002). TatWitt is an inspirational book with essays and poetry to motivate people to pursue their love for the arts. These last 3 days I have been creating a new site for the BZoO Homegrown Radio and Podcast and it was been a real bitch :-0 the coding has kept me up late in the wee hours of the night ..or is that morning? Anyway we are getting there. The Show List has been activated and we added some new mp3 tracks to the BZoO HomeGrown Radio from some great indie musicians, including a phenomenal 12 year young artisit from Mississippi, Mike Morgan. New podcast and Spotlights are in the making too.

If all goes well with enginieering we will boardcast our friends from Kansas City, NightWatch at 10:00 PM EST. NightWatch is hosted by host Legendary Horror Film Director and Producer Todd Sheets as he exposes your mind's eye to ghost, folk-lore, legends, conspiracy and mystery. I am told the show is somewhat like Art Bell's. Let's hope this goes well tonight.

Want To Keep Your New Year's Resolution? Join Me - The Splash 2006 Can Do Project

Every new year thousands of thousands of people, including myself, make or want to make New Year Resolutions that they would like to enhance their lives and those around them.

Mostly, as fast as the new year comes to be ..we fail! Mostly because we fail to plan. Oh sure, we make a list but what support do we have to follow the list? Another reason is our Resolutions or Goals are not defined or realistic. For instance, we all want to make the world a place of peace or we want to clean up homelessness. How are you going to do that. Stand upon a mountain and exclaim peace? No, but you could start a group in your community and forego your mission of social justice.

Ok, I think you get my point, so let me request that you join me as a support group. We shall call our little group "The 2006 Splash Can Do Project". We shall have goals both as individuals and as a group.

At first our 'list' will be somewhat general, but as a group, we help each other define our goals and support each others endeavors. Feel free to comment, ask questions or make suggestions along the way. Also its ok to amend, add or drop a resolution.

Ok here's mine... along with some notations to help you understand the process.

Individual Goals

1) Lose 30 Pounds.

How shall I do this? My plan is to lose 5 lbs a month. That way I will reach my target weight of 165 lbs by June. Summer is a good target date, yes? Additionally I would need to change my eatings and exercise habits.

2) Change My Eating Habits.

If I am to lose 30 lbs then I will need to slow down on the chips and 'midnight' ice cream, yes? But by changing my eating habits I will also change my health. I will have more energy and having more energy I will be more likely to exercise.

3) Exercise At Least 3 Times A Week.

You may be saying but these are all related and you are correct. Thats the idea, each goal helps me obtain my goals. Another benefit from the first 3 here is I will be able to think clearer which will help with my next goals.

4) Become A Better and More Creative Writer.

I feel I need to write with more clarity. Often I feel I am mis-understood when writing, in fact even my verbal communication could use help ..lol.. I would also like to write a few poems, something I havent done in a while. However, I still would like to write in my style that anyone would recognize I am the writer and the trick here would be using creativity.

5) Become A Better Radio Personality.

I havent found my niche yet as a radio personality (or DJ). I want to convey my cosmic self over the airwaves and digital waves. Sometime humorous, sometime serious, sometime somewhere in between. Also to enhance my voice quality.

Group Goals

1) Motivate More Participation At SplashHall Poetry.

We have some of the best talent here at SplashHall. Likewise there 'is' good participation. But I feel so many others that are talented, creative members here, shun from participation for fear of acceptance by the group. SplashHall and its members are like a 'Goldmine' of talent and creativity. We, both members and staff, need to exploit that. More on this as we develope our support group.

2) Develop BZoO HomeGrown Radio Into Dynamic Creative Radio.

BZoO was created as A) an audio outlet for SplashHall. B) to gather more artist in the art arena of independent musicians, songwriters, spoken word artist and audio poets. BZoO is young and growing as is the concept. It has the opportunity to become a leading example and voice in the electronic arts. How shall we do that?

3) Create A Creative Support Group For SplashHall And BZoO HomeGrown Radio.

This is where you come in and your participation is most important. My idea is not only do we encourage and support each other in our individual lives but together we create the direction and future of SplashHall and BZoO. Some will particpate on the basis of just individual growth and some will participate on the basis of the group growth and support.

Let me emphasis the above group goals. To participate your goals may be different. They do not need to be the same. These are my goals. My New Years Resolutions. I will help you reach your New Years Resolution, your goals, your desires and you help me and anyone else who would like to become part of this project. And I hope there is a few of you to start this project and help it grow. The main goal of The 2006 Splash Can Do Project is to help You and Each Other maintain and reach their own NewYear Resolutions, their own 2006 goals. Encourage and help each other make 2006 the year they kept and obtained their individual goals. Are you in? Willing to try?

There's no obligation, no pressure, and its 100% Free. You can participate at your own pace. There is no meetings. There is no set time, except that which you set for yourself to reach your goals. All you need to do is comment, stating you want to be part of this project. A project that is really about you.

I have been very eleborate to try to be clear. You do not need to be. In goal setting and reaching our goals we need to start somewhere. Simply reply, outline, with your 2006 New Year Resolutions here. Please do join me and make 2006 special for all of us, yes?

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are 38 million adults and 2.3 million children living with HIV, and during 2005 some 4.9 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

Twas the Night before Christmas Poem

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

BZoO Radio Host Belinda Subraman While living in Germany in the 1980s Belinda began Gypsy Literary Magazine and Sanctuary Tape Series where she published writings and vocal performances of poets from many countries. Sanctuary ran about 6 years and Gypsy for 10 years before its resurrection in 2004. She also published many books under the VERGIN PRESS imprint including VOCES FRONTERIZAS, writings based on life on the U.S./Mexican border sponsored by the El Paso Public Library as well as THE GULF WAR: MANY PERSPECTIVES, EARTH TONES, IMAGES OF JIM MORRISON and HENRY MILLER AND MY BIG SUR DAYS.

Belinda’s own writing has grown to span a vast array of subjects, styles and publications. She has traveled in over 20 countries, lived in Europe for 6 years and was part of an East Indian family for 22 years. These cross-cultural experiences often inform her work as well as her experiences as a Registered Nurse. These days her poetry, stories, and art can be found in hundreds of journals, reviews, anthologies, books and chapbooks. Since 1994 her archives are housed at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in the Center for Southwest Research. SplashHall Poetry Director Witt Wittmann a recipient of the James A. Rodgers Creative writing award, was born and reared in Lake City, SC. She has attended the the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. Recently retired from the public school system, she now spends her time editing and illustrating books for others. She also the Poetry Directory at Splashhall Poetry. Wittmann is a self-taught, award-winning author and artist. Witt's work has been recognized and displayed at South Carolina's Artisans Center, and her tatted treasures have been exhibited throughout the state. witt has published two books: TatWitt: What I learned When I Learned To Tat (Union County Writers Press 2002) and Musing at La Poulaille (D-N Publishing 2002). TatWitt is an inspirational book with essays and poetry to motivate people to pursue their love for the arts. Special Guest Judge Janice Hale-Hobby, With poetry published in "Woodrider," "Wordart," "Florida Arts Gazette," "Chimera Connections," "Florida State Poets Association," and other small presses, associations, and specialty magazines, "Flicker," my second-international contest winner, was read on National Public Radio. My children's book, "Staying Back," was released in 1982. I had the distinct honor of being featured to read on stage for and with my mentor, Pulitzer-Prize-winning, Library of Congress and New Hampshire Poet Laureate, Richard Eberhart. I earned a MEd. and hours towards a PhD in Special Education Administration from the University of Florida and taught 33 years in the gifted program and special education in both Florida and Texas until my retirement this year due to multi-level spinal fusion. I was a writing consultant to the Florida Teacher Education Center, liaisons to Shands Teaching Hospital Nerology Dept., wrote grants, ESOL, Science Tech., and Gifted curricula in Florida and Texas, and taught students of all ages in private, public, and laboratory settings. Nominated five times by former students for Who's Who Among American Teachers, I loved it when they came back to visit and update me about their lives. Some claim that I made a difference. Little do they know how much I learn from them! Meet The "CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge" Judges

Meet The Judges for cafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge "Red Romance Dancing". The Judge's Court consist of 3 'In House' Judges and 1 'Guest Judge'. CafeRg's Splash Poetry Picture Challenge started as an in house competition for the Splashhall Poetry Community. It has been running for over 4 years. Beginning with this month's Challenge it has expand across cyberspace to include poets around the world.

The Judges score several poems written based on a current picture at the SplashChallenge page. There is usually 8 different challenges throughout the year. Each with a different theme. Poets submit poems based on current pictures, then voted on by popular vote by members of the SplashHall Poetry Community. That's the way it was. Now the submitted poems are scored by selected judges. 4 poems are chosen based on originality, theme, creativity and character. Those 4 poems are then voted by the SplashHall membership and a top poem and a honorable mention poem are awarded banners. They are also award prizes from current sponsors (see list below).

Special Guest Judge Janice Hale-Hobby, With poetry published in "Woodrider," "Wordart," "Florida Arts Gazette," "Chimera Connections," "Florida State Poets Association," and other small presses, associations, and specialty magazines, "Flicker," my second-international contest winner, was read on National Public Radio. My children's book, "Staying Back," was released in 1982. I had the distinct honor of being featured to read on stage for and with my mentor, Pulitzer-Prize-winning, Library of Congress and New Hampshire Poet Laureate, Richard Eberhart. I earned a MEd. and hours towards a PhD in Special Education Administration from the University of Florida and taught 33 years in the gifted program and special education in both Florida and Texas until my retirement this year due to multi-level spinal fusion. I was a writing consultant to the Florida Teacher Education Center, liaisons to Shands Teaching Hospital Nerology Dept., wrote grants, ESOL, Science Tech., and Gifted curricula in Florida and Texas, and taught students of all ages in private, public, and laboratory settings. Nominated five times by former students for Who's Who Among American Teachers, I loved it when they came back to visit and update me about their lives. Some claim that I made a difference. Little do they know how much I learn from them! A tenured insructor at the University of Florida Yonge Laboratory School, I moved to El Paso in 1987 with my former-husband, a keyboardist for the 62nd Army Band, an Army nurse, and veteran of Desert Storm. Nancy Lorenza Green is a Black Chicana from El Paso, Texas and Cd. Ju�rez, Chihuahua. Nancy is a writer and a musician who uses percussion instruments and flute music as mediums of communication and cultural expression. She holds a Master of Education degree from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. A community activist who focuses on women’s issues, Nancy performed at the I Am Your Sister Conference honoring Audre Lorde in Boston, Massachusetts. Her cd Music from the Heart is a compilation

Nancy regularly conducts writing residencies for Tumblewords in El Paso, Texas. She has performed her poetry at the Border Book Festival in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the El Paso Women’s Writer’s Collective event for women’s history month, at La Fe’s Quetzalcoatl Caf�, and La Mujer Obrera. Nancy’s poetry has been published in Border Senses, Chrysalis, and online in poetry.com. She has worked as a visiting artist with the Ysleta Arts Alive program with K-3rd grade students and their teachers in six Ysleta pre-k and elementary schools. She is currently an artist in residence with the Division of Blind Services where she is conducting percussion workshops for visually impaired students, their parents and their siblings.

Still - Splashhall Poetry Members choose by our popular voting system. BUT NOW we are adding the judging expertise of the Rollin Thunder Editor's and Guest Editors from various poetry organization, ezines and magazines. Each challenge will include a different mix of Editor's, up to three (3) judges each challenge.

How It Will Work

Judges will award 4 poems a score of 1 to 4. SplashHall Members will then vote for those 4 poems and, based on most votes, each poem will be scored 1 to 4.

Then the scores for both the Judges top (scored on merit) picks and the SplashHall Members top (popular votes) picks will be added together, creating a Top Poem (First Place) and a Runner Up (Honorable Mention). Ties, should there be any, will be broken and decided by the Judges.

after the crocus, after the jonquils,
about the time to the tulips
when they first sat on the worn bench.
Warmed gently by the late spring
sun, like the ground and new growth
surrounding them, they smiled
faintly, but politely, as each read silently.

An interesting line murmured
prompted a vocal verse.
Before either noticed the shifting sun
it was summer, and they were encased
in day lilies and delphiniums, sharing
entire passages, sometimes pages,
under the blue umbrella of the season.

She loved the narcotic cadence of the words
that lolled from this tongue; he was contented
with the sounds from her lips that whisked
a melody past his ears.

But soft words,
perfectly spoken,
bonds souls in unforeseen measure.
Those not seeking the grail
can fall to the sweet whispers
of joy and blues.

Father Death Blues - Beat Poetry - Allen Ginsberg Official Website

Allen's Notes: "Father Death Blues" was written within 20 hours of hearing of my father's passing. A message from my Tibetan meditation teacher the Ven. Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, said: "I extend my thought that your father enter Dharmakaya. Please let him go, and continue your celebration." I was on the plane home with my harmonium on my lap and wrote it word for word, note for note, like "Jessore Road". One of the rare occasions when both words and music -- the vowels and their tones and pitch -- were conceived simultaneously in the depth of feeling, realization of death. The voice on it is a voice located in the heart area, that is, it resonates in the breast. That's the quality of voice that I heard in Blake vision back in 1948. I never consciously actualized that voice in poem or song of my own until "Father Death Blues". Physical energy diminishes as you get older, but supposedly there's a deepening of wisdom. It seems to me "Father Death Blues" has as much weight and will be as lasting as anything I've done. This recording is '81, after five years' experience singing it with Steven Taylor.

Journalist Judith Miller Jailed ~ Should journalist be forced to give up their sources?

New York Times Journalist, Judith Miller, told U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan that she had no choice but to protect her source in a case that has drawn nationwide attention and renewed debate over a common practice by reporters. "If journalists cannot be trusted to keep confidences, then journalists cannot function and there cannot be a free press," Miller said.

"There is still a realistic possibility that confinement might cause her to testify," Judge Hogan said.

More than 20 reporters have been jailed for refusing to identify sources in the past three decades, according to the group.

In order to keep the trust of informants, under certain circumstances journalist should be able to keep their sources confidential. However if a persons life is in danger, not their livelihood, then it would be appropriate to expose the source.

At the sametime, one would have to consider the endangerment of the informant also. Hence, a discovery would be necessary before forcing a source.

Poetry can be describe as "beautiful language" - painting a picture with words. Usually well structure and with purpose or "on purpose". Zen poetry is in the 'moment'. Much peotry has structure. Zen poetry has no structure.

November in Warsaw

Fifty people together in one room.
Sitting Zen for three days.

Try mind. Bread
And potatoes and onions.
Fifty people eating together.
Get energy. Find the true way.

What is the true way?
Don't know? Primary point?
Before thinking?
Someone appears. Hits the floor.
WHACK!
But is that the true way?

A long time ago in Japan, there was a well-known region called Matsushima. Matsushima is a place by the ocean, with mountains, rivers, trees, and flowers. Matsushima inspired many beautiful poems. At one time the famous Zen Master and poet named Basho decided to visit. When Basho saw the beauty of this place he wrote this poem:

Matsushima --
ah, Matsushima!
Matsushima!

Three clear lines! This is a very famous poem. Only Matsushima is Matsushima -- it is very simple. That is the most important point. This is great Zen poetry.

In Zen one is taught there is only the moment. No right or wrong. No good or evil. Just this monent. Zen mind, poetry mind, writing mind, practicing mind, all are not different. - see clearly, hear clearly, smell clearly, and think clearly. My thinking is clear, not checking anything. just think clearly, then make your poem.

This form of writing reminds me of a book called "The Artist Way" by Julia Cameron. A 'creativity' workshop book to help expand ones creative (and to break writer's block). One of your daily practice was to, immediately upon awaking, write what was called "the morning pages". Each morning, in silence, (coffee and cigarettes acceptable) you would write all thoughts that raced through your mind. It did not matter if any of it made sense or if one thought was related to the next thought. (by the way this techique is very effected)

You didnt think about your thoughts you just wrote them down. The same with Zen poetry, one does not think or make a poem, one just does in the monent. Like the Cameron's Morning Pages, Zen poetry can be very effective with your creative process.

Zen poetry, morning pages
lost mind. beginners mind;
sip coffee; sexual depuration.

look at time, sigh -
morning breeze, a red cardinal flys by
write Zen, clear mind - explain.

look at computer, sip coffee;
breath deep; stretch.
Zen mind, beginners mind.

Can you say that? - H a p p y Memorial Day? - What's happy about it? Well Walmart and Target will be having Memorial Day savings. Food markets are selling hamburg and hotdogs with a smile. Parks and beaches will be filled with families laughing and playing with the aroma of charcoal and kerosene in the air. Gas stations are happy about Memorial Day. School is out in most places so children are happy. If you live in the USA its the beginning of summer.

I guess there is a lot there to be happy about? Or is there?

Blogging aka 'journaling' has come a long way since its conception in the 1990s. Blogging was introduced for family and friends to communicate online with a touch of creativity. Some blogs were used for the sole purpose of an online diary. Blogging software was created to offer an user-friendly format, that allowed even those that didn't have any knowledge of html or website building. Blogging software is an organized, usually reverse chronological order, format where any user only needs to know how to press the keys (type) on a keyboard.

Today blogging has become much more sophisticated, though the basic start point of any blogware is still type and click (user-friendly). Blogs are now popular among political groups, educators, students, journalist, corporations, entrepreneurs, moms, pops - just about anyone who wants to create an interactive forum for displaying of ones craft, thoughts or opinions, rants and raves. Blogs can be used, to name a few, for art, photography, writing, poetry.

Why Every Writer & Poet Should Blog

A blog can be your best friend. A blog can be your BIO or publisher. A blog can be your creative outlet. If you choose you can allow others to comment to get feedback on a new idea whether a poem or story. If you're a seasoned writer or poet you can help others with advise. You can use your blog as a tool to tell the world of a new book or chapbook you're releasing. Or your blog can be your chapbook. It can be any combination of the above or anything you want it to be.

As you dip your pen further into blogging you will learn of RSS syndication where others can subscribe to your blog and stay up-to-date to your latest with a click of their mouse. Blues is almost always sad but behind the sadness in blues there is almost always laughter and strength.

With all that said to help you understand our purpose and goal, we need a name for our coffee. Listed in the poll is some suggestions and we would like to know what you would like to see Splash call our coffee. The name chosen could be exact or a variation.

Hackers Use Blogs To Spread Virus Worms, Trojans And Keyloggers

Blogs are becoming a popular hacker target, said a security and content filtering firm Wednesday, blogs increasingly are being used as a safe haven by hackers for storing and distributing malicious code, including identity-stealing keyloggers.

"We're seeing that more and more of the locations where malicious code is stored is on blog sites," said Dan Hubbard, the senior director of security and technology research for San Diego-based Websense. So far this year, Hubbard said, his lab has discovered hundreds of blogs involved in the storage and delivery of harmful code.

In particular, keyloggers, trojan, malware and other spyware writers are turning to blogs -- and away from traditional hosting and/or e-mail services -- because they offer large amounts of free storage space, they don't require any identity authentication to post, and most blog hosting services don't scan posted files for viruses, worms, or spyware.

While end-users can do little beyond keep safe and smart practices in mind -- however, Hubbard said, there is plenty blog software makers and hosting services could do.

"They need to add some type of security on top," he urged. "Anti-virus is a good start. And limit the type of files that can be uploaded, by, for example, restricting executables (.exe)."

Why Fair Trade Organic Coffee?

For a moment, give the coffee you're drinking right now (or today) some thought? Or perhaps you're a tea drinker? Soda? In one way or another they are relevant to Fair Trade.

Fair Trade means just that 'Fair Trade', a fair transaction between a buyer and a seller. It also has a deeper impact on 'us all' both socially and through the environment. The Fair Trade Movement was created to bring you a quality product while offering the creator fair compensation for their efforts or craft. While offering fair compensation it also contributes to their families and the communties which they live.

“Coffee is a very good crop for us. We are members of the coffee cooperative, and they give us a good price. Because they buy our coffee fruit, we don’t have to process it. We expanded our coffee farm two years ago, and we will plant more seedlings this year.” - Maria Soares - and Family grow coffee in East Timor.

Fair Trade is spreading its grassroots from coffee and artistic crafts to fruit and sweetners. These are products that are mostly from third world counties, like Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Ethiopia, Kenya, East Timor and others.

Genuine Fair Trade traders deal directly with small farmers and cooperatives in these countries. They help and assure that their growing practices adhere to certain Fair Trade stanards, both socially and environmentally, as dopted by Fair Trade advocates and organizations. They assure Fair Trade practices are followed from the farms or estates all the way to the roasters and coffeehouses. Even the workers of these coffeehouses share the idealogy of Fair Trade.

Fair Trade Coffee is not just about social justice or environment conciousness, its also about global networking, good will, sharing lives and views. Its is also a way of life - perhaps a way to understanding each other and bringing about global peace. You may laugh but maybe what America (or the world) needs is a political party called The FairTrade Party :-) or at the least a Department of Fair Trade, to assure that humanity transforms into a responsible and 'just' planet of neighbors.

Now back to that coffee or beverage you're drinking. Is it commercial profit oriented or Fair Trade organic coffee, humanity aligned?

Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world after oil. It is the most significant part of the economy in many of the world's poorest countries.

Kaldi And His Dancing Goats
It is told an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi was napping on the job and awoke to discover his goats had roamed to a distant hillside dancing around a wild coffee tree. He hurried his way to them and saw that they were eating the red berries from the tree. Curious about the dazzling energy of his usually lackadaisical goats, Kaldi decided to try the berries, also.

Kaldi, too, experienced the burst of energy and an euphoric high. The coffee berries became a daily ritual for Kaldi and his dancing goats. Along came a local monk and questioned the goat herder about their appearance of dancing, Kaldi showed him the red berry coffee tree. The monk, amazed, experimented with different ways of preparing the berries and began to serve a tea made from steeping them to his monastery. Hence, the begining of coffee and, ummm, dancing goats.

Whether or not Kaldi discovered the wonders of the coffee tree, we do know that the earliest records of natural organic coffee consumption are from monasteries in the homeland of Ethiopia. From there it spread throughout the Ottoman Empire. First coveted for it's medicinal properties, it was the social effects of coffee that made it an integral part of Arab life and by the mid sixteenth century the world's first coffeehouses were opening in Constantinople, Cairo and Mecca.

Fair trade and organic coffee is grown by small coffee farmers that grow organic, shade grown coffee mostly through fair trade coffee cooperatives that help the coffee growers receive fair payment for their efforts. These efforts include growing a better coffee cherry, coffee beans, while paying attention to the environment.

Fair Trade coffee beans are organically grown, producing the highest quality taste and aroma. To become Fair Trade certified, an importer must meet stringent international criteriat. Fair Trade for coffee farmers means education, healthcare, environmental stewardship, and community development.

When you purchase and drink fair trade and organic coffee you get a coffee that has a distinct taste and aroma. Like fine wine or a great brewski you can immediate taste the difference. This distinct difference sometimes needs to become appreciated due to the fact the coffee you have been drinking is mostly mass produced and marketed coffee.

But Wait! Just because it says its fair trade or organic coffee doesnt make it good. That coffee, to be sure of proper processing, has to be roasted correctly. It has to be packaged correctly. Lastly, it has to brewed correctly.

Valentine Call

I searched for a love to call my own
A place to give my heart a home
Finding only stepping-stones
Giving loneliness its right to the throne

I fell in drenches, climbed prefab hills
Finding only two-minute thrills
Until one night I was draped with a chill

She too sang her stories of woe
Tales of sorrow her heart hung low

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE

It was the night before I saw you, and all through my heart,
Many feelings were stirring, the realities were quite stark.
I tried to relax while taking great care,
Realizing that soon you would be there.

I was nestled all snug in my bed,
With visions of you dancing in my head.
I had on my jammies, and a book on my lap,
And was about to settle for a long nights nap.

When all of the sudden I heard such a clatter,
I sprang straight up to see what was the matter.
Away to the bathroom I flew in a flash,
Turned on the cold tap and my face I did splash.

It was a full moon and a night full of snow,
Shadows came at me that I didn't know.
I was wondering what was happening here,
But I dreaded the answers should they appear.

There was one small shadow, lively and quick,
I thought for a moment this must be a trick.
More rapid it moved, and more of them came,
While it shouted and whistled and called them by name.

Now Fear! now Mistrust! now Uncertainty and Confusion!
Let us get together and cloud his vision!
To his head we must go! Let us not stall!
We must get to him! We must make him fall!

Away from them I wildly tried to fly,
They placed every obstacle before me, theses shadows were quite sly
I continued to flee, oh if I only knew,
What are these shadows and what are they up too?

Then in a blink I fell for a loop,
More shadows gathered, while others went poof.
I threw up my hand and tried to turn around,
When one large shadow stepped up with a bound.

It had no shape from its head to its foot,
It stood there and stirred, all dark as soot.
It made one move, it took one step back.
Then it started to speak with a voice that did crack.

Its eyes were like fire, glowing red as cherries.
Still stirring at me, menacing, not merry.
What looked like a mouth, exposed fangs in the glow,
What was going to happen, I just did not know.

It bent over and bared its teeth,
And oh how its breath did reek.
It was faceless and round and even quite smelly,
And by now I'm shaking like jelly.

It was cold and clammy and not very jolly,
I wiggled and squirmed, but escape was pure folly.
I turned and twisted being full of dread,
I thought for a moment it would bite off my head.

It began to speak; its words pierced my heart,
I listened intently; its words gave me a start.
It spoke eloquently and with great prose,
Then it nodded and yanked me up to my toes.

With one mighty leap it ran down the hall,
Leaving me these words while taking a great fall;
"It's your own insecurities that's giving you this fright,
Wake up you fool, you’re having a bad night!"

Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don’t have the moral courage to oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is “Not One Damn Dime Day” in America.

On “Not One Damn Dime Day,” those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.

During “Not One Damn Dime Day” please don’t spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.

On “Not One Damn Dime Day,” please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target. Please don’t go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don’t buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).

6) The Colts will win the SuperBowl.
7) Hollywood Jack will catch up on his revues.
8) Google will raise the ZoO's page rank.
9) To be 'conservative right' will be considered to be skank.

10) Bill Gates will giveaway (free) windows 2005 (code name LongHorn).

Running Toward Night

With one last glance I close the door
Leaving my life behind me;
Drawing the hood of my cloak up close
Going where none can find me.

The fading green by the lintel stone,
Where summer splendors cling,
Draws my heart in a last embrace
As the stars and the night birds sing.

Far from this cottage greenwood clad:
Away from love go I;
Where hope is wrenched from a mothers breast;
When innocent children die.

Depart from love and laughter;
Cast far from my glad eyed boys
From the searing touch of Fevers hand
And the life that He destroys.

Leaving behind the moonlit hills
That shadow the fresh turned earth.
Sweet milk spills, marking my pain
As it did when I gave birth.

Tearing away I run thru the gate
And on to what beckons me;
While the anguished sobs that stumble ahead
Are drowned in the cry of the sea.

The moon rides high as it lights my way
I walk its ribboned light.
I am wrapped in the oceans icy arms
There is cold.
There is peace.
There is night.

Donate The 'Project Apollonia' For The Children

Project Apollonia is the Dream of Grupo Utopia Founder David Anderson and children's book author Nancy Gilliam. The purpose of the project is to provide Costa Rican school children with access to high quality English language books for grades K-6. Project Apollonia is named for Apollonia Anderson Calderon, David's youngest daughter, born December 4, 2003.

The Goal of Project Apollonia is to donate 1,000 children's books to Costa Rican schools by June of this year (2004), and 10,000 by the end of the year. To that end, A group of parties in the United States and Costa Rica have organized Project Apollonia as a non profit organization based in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Our plan is to donate the first batch of books in June of 2004 to the Costa Rican Ministry of Education. Our focus is to donate the first thousand books to the poorest schools in Costa Rica, and we have selected Limon, the poorest of Costa Rica's seven provinces to receive the first of the books.

A Poets View ~ Series of Perspectives VII

Being a writer of poetry is rarely financially rewarding, not to mention maddening and terrible. Compared with other writing media, it does not garner the same excitement as a new film or fiction blockbuster, nor does it have the same cachet.

While many might protest, citing a current resurgence of interest ('What about slams?' they might ask. 'What about all these poet laureates?'), poetry still feels marginalised. So rare does a book of poetry break through to the Best Seller glass ceiling of novels and non-fiction that it's a big deal when it does. It's an aberration, and people must call attention to it.

But there is a good side to being overlooked.

You have freedom to create what you like, with no mind as to what's sexy, or hot, or what the public wants at this very moment. Very few eyes are on you. Anonymity is sometimes delicious. There is less pressure, and even then, it is of a different sort, usually self-generated.

Writing poetry doesn't answer to deadlines, or agents, or fans, or three-picture movie deals. Imagine the sort of poetry that would result if it did.

The compulsion to write poetry, like any creative impulse, is inexplicable and ...well, Sylvia Plath said it best when she wrote:

The blood jet is poetry,
There is no stopping it.
